Starting during the Industrial Revolution, the use of asbestos in the UK grew rapidly. It was imported all over the country and used in factories, housing and manufacturing.
During the two World Wars its versatility made asbestos hugely valuable to the war effort. World War II witnessed a huge boom in its usage – from protective clothing to industrial machinery to naval ships and military vehicles.
In the post-war years of the 1940s and 1950s, asbestos was used to help rebuild the country.
Even today, the legacy of asbestos is all around us.
