Over 30,000 Council Buildings Found tContain Asbestos

This week new research has revealed an extraordinary amount of council buildings in England alone, contain potentially dangerous level of asbestos. A national law firm, Stephensons Solicitors LLP, carried out first-hand research and concluded that over 30,000 buildings owned by councils in England contain asbestos.

Out of 333 council organisations in England Stephenson’s sent an information request too, 253 responded confirming they own or manage at least one building where the substance is present.

Court Papers Reveal UK Asbestos Manufacturer withheld Information

Cape, one of the UK’s biggest manufacturers of asbestos historically withheld information on risks posed by asbestos, playing down the dangers, whist simultaneously encouraging the government to alter product warnings laws in order to suit their business goals, according to documents released after a lengthy court battle. Alban Arena Due to Open in Spring After Asbestos Closure

The Alban Arena, located in St Albans, Hertfordshire is "on schedule to reopen in the late spring", the district council for the area has said.

BBC Payout to Families of Former Employees Over Asbestos Related Deaths

Following a freedom of information request by the Observer newspaper it has been revealed that the BBC has paid £1.64m in damages after 11 previous members of staff died due to asbestos related diseases that were contracted because of their work in BBC buildings that were covered in the deadly material.

These payments were made to the families of the former staff members who had worked as make-up artists, engineers, riggers, set builders, studio managers and television producers at the corporation across many different BBC buildings up and down the country......

Asbestos Removal on Alban Arena Scheduled to Get Underway in February

Asbestos removal at St Albans’ Alban Arena will cost almost £240,000 the District Council has confirmed, this follows the pantomime performance of Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs being cancelled in December following asbestos safety concerns (a story which we covered in a previous blog, click here to find out  more).

The St Albans District Council have said how samples taken at the end of the year were found to have contained asbestos and they have shared how they expect remedial work to get underway in February.

FDA Report May Leader To Stricter Asbestos Testing

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have started to move further down the path towards more stringent testing standardisations when looking at asbestos fibres in cosmetic products that contain talc This follows the discovery in recent years of asbestos traces in several products such as children’s toys, crayons and makeup based products.

Death of Former Electrical Board Worker Heading to Inquest

An inquest has been told how the death of a former employee of the electrical board on Christmas day could be partly because of asbestosis that he had caught due to his work.

Brian Hayes who died at the age of 87 was a retired weaving shed employee for the electrical board and the court was told how Mr Hayes’ cause of death, aspirational pneumonia had been brought on by the asbestos related lung disease.

Asbestos Fears Following Fire at Nottingham Garage

It was recommended last week for residents in Thames Street, Nottingham area to keep their doors and windows closed recently due to asbestos fears as fire service crews had tackled a fire in the region.

The blaze which originated in a garage in Bulwell just before 11:15pm on Tuesday 4th January, saw approximately 60 firefighters attend the scene. The Nottinghamshire fire and rescue service explained that there was now a "risk of asbestos in the smoke" from the fire which at that time was still being fought.

Pantomime Forced to Shut Down Due to Asbestos Fears

Alban Arena in St Albans have had to cancel their Christmas pantomime of ‘Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs’ starring Holby City actress Chizzy Akudolu, which the venue has explained is because "Significant works are needed to the affected area, which is in a hard to get at spot," after an "asbestos-related situation".

20 years Old Asbestos Exposure Leads to Death of IT worker

Roy Williams, from Ammanford in Carmarthenshire, had three sons - all of whom followed in his footsteps into the IT industry.
